Around 20 years ago, the quest for increased electrospray performance led to the observation that low flow rates generate much smaller initial droplets, ensuring improved ionization efficiency.

Emmett and Caprioli demonstrated improved performance for HPLC-MS at 300-800 nL/min. Wilm and Mann demonstrated that a capillary flow of ~25 nL/min can sustain an electrospray at the top of emitters fabricated by pulling glass capillaries.

An exponential increase in utilization of these developments led to the establishment of new companies addressing these new demands.
